DRDO to develop Desi Aircraft Arrester Gears for IAF

DRDO has issued a Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) to reputable Indian public/private limited companies to be a “Development and Production Partner” (DCPP) for Aircraft Arrester Gear-NG.

The goal of the REOI is to establish a shortlist of vendors for the issuance of an RFP for the specified product. The vendor’s scope of work includes two phases termed DRDO Project Phase and Production phase.

What is Aircraft Arrester?

An aircraft arresting system, also known as an arrestor gear or arresting gear, is a mechanical system used to rapidly decelerate an aircraft as it lands on a runway.

The system is designed to enable the aircraft to stop within a short distance, and is typically used on aircraft carriers and at military airfields.

Arresting gear consists of a series of cables, strung across the runway, that are attached to hydraulic or pneumatic energy absorbers.

When an aircraft lands on the runway and its wheels make contact with the cables, the energy absorbers are activated and rapidly decelerate the aircraft.

The arresting gear is typically used in combination with other systems, such as chocks and barricades, to bring the aircraft to a complete stop.

Types of Aircraft Arrester

There are several types of aircraft arresting systems, including:

  1. Cable Arresting System: This is the most common type of arresting system, and consists of a series of cables strung across the runway that are attached to hydraulic or pneumatic energy absorbers.
  2. Net Arresting System: This type of arresting system uses a large net, stretched across the runway, to decelerate the aircraft as it lands. The net is made of a strong, flexible material and is attached to energy absorbers.
  3. Barrier Arresting System: This type of arresting system uses a series of barriers, similar to those used in car racing, to decelerate the aircraft as it lands. The barriers are made of a strong, flexible material and are attached to energy absorbers.
  4. Water Arresting System: This type of arresting system uses a large pool of water, located at the end of the runway, to decelerate the aircraft as it lands. The water is typically covered with a layer of foam to reduce the impact on the aircraft.
  5. Deceleron Arresting System: This type of arresting system uses a series of decelerons, which are flaps on the runway that can be deployed to create drag and decelerate the aircraft as it lands.
